There Are Results and There Are Results

Results matter, how they were achieved, how they are communicated, and how people perceive them all matter intensely.

But there are results, and there are results.

Results for Barack Obama, Bill Gates, Gordon Brown, the crazy leader of N. Korea, and Al Queda all differ. To determine what results you want to achieve, identify your strategic objective, then identify the results you need to get you there.

If your goal is to become a first-rate spelunker, having climbed 5 peaks over 20,000 feet last year won't be good results for you. They would be if you were going to become a world-class mountain climber. Learning to climb the Eiger, there you.

There results and there are results.

My goal here is to bring out more skilled entrepreneurs. How am I doing?

Entrepreneurship is the life's blood of all my professional activities. It makes them go. It informs my connection strategy.

Covey on Leadership

M. L. Covey, in The Speed of Trust (2006), p. 115, defines leadership as "getting results in a way that inspires trust."

Point, set, match!!

Results matter, and appearances matter, but...

What we achieve matters, and how what we achieve is interpreted by others matters, but how we get those results matters just as much.

Covey says, in The Speed of Trust (2006), p. 114, "In considering results, you always need to ask two critical questions: What results am I getting? and How am I getting those results?"

Past results matter because they are one thing that others have to judge us on. How people view them matters because they're the ones we're counting on to promote us to others, and how you get them matters because you don't want to use methods that are so Draconian that everyone feels bruised in the process.

If you achieved the highest sales ever in your company, you're not going to do any long-term good if your suppliers hate you, your partners can't stand to work with you, no one will sit on your board, and no one will work for you, your wife divorces you, and your children can't stand to be seen with you. An extreme example, I agree, but you get the point?

So we need always to think about what we want to achieve, how want to achieve them, and our achievements will be interpreted by others. We can't control this last one, but we need to at least consider it.

My goal here is to bring out more skilled entrepreneurs. How am I doing?

Results matter, but...

Past results matter because they are one thing that others have to judge us on. When Brad Lidge, the now infamous closer for the Philadelphia Phillie's, was flawless in relief in 2008 and led the team to the world series, every Phillie's fan in Philadelphia sang his praises as a hero.

A "closer" in baseball is a pitcher who comes in at the every end of the game when the team is leading by a few runs to get the other team out and make sure his team wins. He's kind of the goalie in hockey, the last may between the team and a win. The pitcher is credited with a "save" when he keeps the team from losing late in the game. There are specific rules to determine what is or is not a "save situation," that is a situation the exists such that a save could be earned. They keep statistics of a closer's "save percentage," that is the number of times the pitcher saved the game divided by the number of save situations.

But in 2009, when Lidge had the worst result of any closer in his league and got the loss for a key game in the world series, which Philadelphia lost to the New York Yankees 4 games to 2, everybody was ready to lynch him. They hated him, more than Bryan Madson, even though Madson blew more saves than Lidge. Madson didn't pitch nearly as much in those situations in which he could have gotten a "save." And Lidge was close to the top in the number of saves he made. So, go figure.

2009 was an unwelcomed change for Phillies fans. But what matters for Lidge's career is how people see the results. So, while results matter, what matters more is how people interpret them.

You may remember Ronald Reagan being called the "Teflon president." I don't know if there is still Teflon, but it is, or was, a substance with could be applied to a frying or baking pan and fried or baked food wouldn't stick to it. Of course there were health concerns when Teflon started coming off in your food, but that's a different story. Reagan had all sorts of bad results, and a lot of it never hurt them, never stuck to him. Another president, not Teflon coated, would have been toast because no matter what he did, everything would have stuck to him.

So this means, you have to get results, and get results that others see in the propert light.

I recommended to a SCORE client Thursday that she volunteer to get experience and recommendations so she could start her business while keeping her day job. The one thing professionals need in business is experience, good results, and people who will testify to others. Entrepreneurs need results, too, and results that to which others will testify. an idea of how others see your results.

Covey--Results Matter

M.L.Covey, in The Speed of Trust. The One Thing That Changes Everything (New York: Free Press, 2006), says "Results Matter." (p. 112).

No surprises here.

Covey gives three "key indicators" by which people evaluate results: past performance, current performance, and anticipated performance.

What you've done in the past is sort of like a lagging indicator. What you are doing is a kind of current indicator. And anticipated results is a analogous to a leading indicator.

What are results and how do people evaluate them, we'll unpack that in a later post.

How to Increase Your Capabilities

Covey, in The Speed of Trust. The One Thing That Changes Everything (New York: Free Press, 2006), has on pp. 104-107, three ways of increasing your capabilities:
1. "Run with Your Strengths (and with Your Purpose)."

2. "Keep Yourself Relevant."

3. "Know Where You're Going."
He says:
To know where you're going and have the capabilities to get there is another way of demonstrating competence, and with that confidence, coupled with character, creates a credible leaders whom others will follow--not because they're forced, but because they're inspired to do so.
What more can we want.

Fifth Dimension of Capability: Style

Covey, in The Speed of Trust. The One Thing That Changes Everything (New York: Free Press, 2006), says: "Style represents our unique approach and personality." [p. 94]

Writers call this our voice. It's all the things that make us, us. It's what gets people reading. It's what keeps people reading. In entrepreneurship, we have a voice too. It's what gets people buying our stuff and buying into our vision. It can also be known as our brand or our reputation.

Here are the questions Covey would have us ask us about our style:
How effective is my current style in approaching problems and opportunities and interacting with others? Does my approach facilitate or get in the way of accomplishing what needs to be done? What can I do to improve the way in which I do things?(p.100)
Again, if you aren't sure, or even if you are to get an outside opinion, see what others think.

Also think back to the times when you didn't get what you wanted. Try to see what the reason for that might have been. Was it related to your style? And how should that have been different? You'll never know for sure, but you can at least use the exercise to help you think about your style.

Fourth Dimension of Capability: Knowledge

Covey, in The Speed of Trust. The One Thing That Changes Everything (New York: Free Press, 2006), says: "Skills represents our learning, insight, understanding, and awareness." [p. 94]

Covey would have us ask the following about our knowledge:
What is my current level of knowledge of my specific field? What am I doing to stay current? What other areas of knowledge am I pursuing? (p.99)
He goes on to tell us that increasing our knowledge is key in today's economy. I heartily concur. We have to know more and more about more and more.

Third Dimension of Capability: Skills

Covey, in The Speed of Trust. The One Thing That Changes Everything (New York: Free Press, 2006), says: "Skills are our proficiencies, what we can do well." [p. 94]

Here are his questions for you, on p. 96:
What skills do I currently have? What skills will I need in the future that I do not currently have? To what degree am involved in constantly upgrading my skills?
I disagree a little bit. I think you should ask yourself what skills will make you into the kind of person you want to be. Then when a future arrives, you'll be Abel to tweak yourself to take advantage of it.
