A/B Testing

I'm not in favor of entrepreneurs advertising unless is will prove to be revenue generating within their business model.

So here it is:
A/B testing or bucket testing is a method of marketing testing by which a baseline control sample is compared to a variety of single-variable test samples in order to improve response rates. A classic direct mail tactic, this method has been recently adopted within the interactive space to test tactics such as banner ads, emails and landing pages.

Significant improvements can be seen through testing elements like copy text, layouts, images and colors. However, not all elements produce the same improvements, and by looking at the results from different tests, it is possible to identify those elements that consistently tend to produce the greatest improvements.

Employers of this A/B testing method will distribute multiple samples of a test, including the control, to see which single variable is most effective in increasing a response rate or other desired outcome. The test, in order to be effective, must reach an audience of a sufficient size that there is a reasonable chance of detecting a meaningful difference between the control and other tactics: see Statistical power.

This method is different to multivariate testing which applies statistical modeling which allows a tester to try multiple variables within the samples distributed.
If you are advertising but haven't worked out a way of measuring results, try this. And read more of the Wikipedia article.

/Value of Negative Experiences

My trip to Parsipanny, NJ, yesterday to learn about a new consultants' network did not have the benefit I'd hoped for. But it had one I didn't expect.

It reinforced what not to look for in any business relationship. Poor presentation. Disrespect for others. Self-centeredness. Failing to follow through on promises. Reluctance to entrepreneur strategically. Not keeping up with the times. Being comfortable with wasting people's time.

I also learned a mistake I hope never to make again. I'll share this with you on Monday.

Simple, Straightforward, Authentic

I went to Parsipanny, NJ, yesterday to learn about a new consultants' network I might join. The organization promised to train you something, it wasn't quite clear, and put you in front of business who need you as clients, in ways that weren't quite clear. And they needed $9,995 of your money to be a part this wonderful thing.

At best an expensive lead generation service and at worst a blatant Ponzi scheme. In either case, thanks but no thanks.

I think there's a valid business model in there, but not the way it was laid out, or not laid out.

Finding your voice and writing

Finding your voice for a fiction writer is key. Do you want to come out the shoot sounding exactly like Cormac McCarthy? Or Stephen King? A friend of mine modelled his books after Elmore Leonard. He had trouble selling any because Elmore Leonard has a huge audience already so who needed him?

Find your voice. It underlies all that you do. If you don't know what it is, see what you want it to be and start acting as though your voice is that.

Finding Your Voice

Since I'm starting over let me reiterate what I've said before. Before becoming anything you need to find your voice. Sometimes called your brand. What makes you you? What makes you unique? What drives you? What do you want your life to be like.

It took me 64 years to be to articulate mine: simple, straightforward, and authentic. That's my voice. It informs my writing, my real estate, and my entrepreneuring.

You should make sure you know yours. If you don't know what it is ask other people who know you. And figure out what you want it to be. If others' opinions don't agree you have some work to do.

If you don't know it you'll either not likely be successful or if you're successful you won't be happy.

As Rick Nelson said in his song Garden Party:"You can't please everyone/So you've got to please yourself."

Writing and Real Estate are Entrepreneurial

Writing and Real estate are entrepreneurial endeavors. Many writers don't think this is the case. They think they are artists. They are. These days they also have to have business sense.

Real estate agents are also entrepreneurs. Many are fooled by brokers they have to work under who take a goodly portion of their earnings.

I hope to fold both of these activities into entrepreneurship. You'll see.
