Human Capital Continued--a Warrior Way of Thinking

Success as an entrepreneur benefits from thinking like a warrior. A warrior sees threats as problems to overcome. He or she asks how they can pull things together to get past or over whatever barrier they see ahead.

Too many people think like victims do. They see a problem and ask, "What did this have to happen to me?" An entrepreneur can't think that way.

Problems are opportunities in disguise.

Human Capital--Trust and Leadership and Health

We've talked leadership and trust to death. These are two major forms of human capital the entrepreneur needs in spades. If you're still foggy on them, check out some of my earlier blogs. Just search for them and they'll come up. These bring up the complex of forms of human capital you will need.

But there's other things. For example good health. You have to have good health to start a business. You can't be at the top of your form if you're always fighting an illness. If you do have health problems think again what you are up to. If you have a partner who can help you out, that's to the good.

If you're starting a business, get as fit as possible and practice behaviors that promote good health so you can get in the game and stay there.

Ron Burt Revisited

Here again is Ron Burt. I've drawn on his work before on social capital. If you want to read about that search on Ron Burt.

Here's a quote from Structural Holes; the Social Structure of Competition(Boston, MA: Harvard University Press, 1992, pp. 8-9):
A player bring at least three kinds of capital to the competitive arena...financial capital: cash in hand, reserves in the bank, investments coming due, lines of credit. Second...human capital. Your natural qualities--charm, health, intelligence, and looks--combined with the skills you have acquired in formal eduction and job experience gives you abilities to excel at certain tasks. Third...social capital: relationships with other players. You have friends, colleagues, and more general contacts through whom you receive opportunities to use your financial and human capital.

Re-redefinition of an Entrepreneur

We got ahead of ourselves talking about organizational trust. Let's backtrack and stick with the entrepreneur for a little while longer before going on to talk about entrepreneurial organizations.

First we defined an "entrepreneur" as an "individual who undertook an enterprise within an atmosphere of uncertainty and risk."

After reviewing John C. Maxwell's 21 laws of leadership we re-conceptualized the individual as a "leader" and defined "entrepreneur" as "a leader who undertakes an enterprise within an atmosphere of uncertainty and risk."

Then, after reviewing Covey's ideas on trust, we've further extended our concept of the entrepreneur to be a "trusted leader." So let's define an "entrepreneur" as: "A trusted leader who undertakes an enterprise within an atmosphere of uncertainty and risk."

We'll talk more about the entrepreneur before we get to talking about the enterprise he or she undertakes.

Covey: Low Trust Works Like A Tax

Covey says: "If you don't have a high-trust organization, you are paying a tax, and it's a wasted tax. While these taxes may not conveniently show up on the income statement as 'trust taxes,' they're still there, disguised as other problems." (p. 250)

Think about Covey's equation: Lower trust means slower speed and higher costs. The difference between the costs your company bears as a low-trust organization and the cost it would bear if it became a high-trust company equals the amount of this tax.

How You Know You Work in a Low-trust Organization

Remember Covey, in The Speed of Trust, 2006, talked about the five waves of trust. The first two were self-trust and relationship trust.

The third wave of trust is organizational trust. On pp. 236ff he talks about the third wave of trust: Organizational Trust. Organizations can range from high to low trust.

In which kind do you work? How would you know?

Well, he argues on p. 237 that in a low-trust organization, people:
>Manipulate or distort facts.
> Withhold or hoard information.
> Overemphasize getting credit given to them for things.
> Spin truth to their advantage.
> Openly resist and stifle new ideas.
> Cover over or cover up mistakes.
> Blame and bad-mouth others.
> Engage in watercooler talk.
> Hold numerous meetings after meetings.
> Overpromise and undeliver.
> Make excuses for violated expectations.
> Pretend bad things aren't happening or are in denial.
> Have no energy.
> Feel unproductive tension, sometimes even fear.
Watch the television show "The Office" if you can stand it. It demonstrates just about every facet of a low-trust organization.

I can't stand it because everybody is so unrelentingly awful.

Covey's Third Wave: Organizational Trust

Remember Covey, in The Speed of Trust, 2006, talked about the five waves of trust. The first two were self-trust and relationship trust. The third wave of trust is organizational trust.

Organizational Trust is the trust that infuses or doesn not infuse organizations. High-trust organizations are those in which people trust each other a lot. Low-trust organizations are those in which people do not trust each other or the organization.

How this manifests itself and what it results in is the subject of the next group of blogs.

Extending Trust: Two Counterfeit Versions

"Extend Trust" is the 13th behavior put forth by Covey in The Speed of Trust, 2006, p. 222ff.

He stressed authenticity, though. He says the counterfeit of this behavior takes two form: extending "false" trust or extending "fake" trust.

Extending false trust is "giving people the responsibility, but not the authority or resources, to get the task done." That's my take on the concept of empowerment. Basically saying you're on your own, Kid.

Extending fake trust is "acting like you trust someone when you really don't...you entrust someone with a job, but at the end of the day you 'snoopervise,' hover over or 'big brother' the person, or even do his job for him."

Either one of these is to be avoided.
